Siwa 50th Anniversary Chardonnay

Description

The wine itself has the elegant appearance of pale straw and has citrus tones of lemon and grapefruit on the nose. With hints of peach, butterscotch and apple crumble notes wrapped around gun-flintiness, leading into floral notes of white roses on a warm spring day.

On the palate, it shows oak notes of crème brûlée and smoked bacon leading to fresh fruit notes of green apple and rockmelon that encompass luxury creamy oak flavours that create depth and interest. The texture is striking yet poised and settled, which marries beautifully into the alluring acid line.

The overall finish is weighted and lengthy, where the hints of peach and butterscotch carry this wine to the next dimension to encapsulate all that is Kellybrook and our proud history.

This wine is served best at 13 degrees. The optimum drinking window is 2 – 5 years from vintage, although this wine will cellar marvellously for seven years.

THE STORY BEHIND THE WINE

Kellybrook was founded by true pioneers of the wine industry in the Yarra Valley – Darren and Farley Kelly – in 1960 and initially produced only cider. 1970 saw Kellybrook granted the first vigneron’s licence in the Yarra Valley and the opening of the region’s first cellar door. In 1975, parts of the orchard gave way to vineyards. Initially planting Shiraz, Cabernet, Gewurztraminer, and Riesling, the plantings were later complemented with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Now nearing 50 years old, the vines are producing fruit of ever-increasing quality, with incredible concentration and finesse creating an extensive range of premium wines, the hero being still and sparkling Chardonnay. This property is a family affair entrenched in memories. Now, Darren and Farley’s sons, Phil and Gus, head up the operations and the next generation are also involved.

To commemorate the 50-year milestone, it seemed fitting for us to select the best batch of Chardonnay off our own Siwa vineyard from vintage 2020 for its own celebratory bottling. This Anniversary Chardonnay is enriched in our history and will forever stand out as something special - a one in fifty-year opportunity.

This blend is made up entirely of the clone P58, regarded as a top-class clone throughout the Yarra Valley. These hand-picked grapes were whole bunch pressed and naturally fermented in oak puncheons to maintain that classic rich Chardonnay flavour. After fermentation, the wine was left in situ on lees for nine months prior to the bottling without filtration.
