This wine has been made to pay homage to the vineyard from which it was sourced. The Malakoff Vineyard lies in north-western Victoria, close to the town of Ararat. The altitude is around 300 metres above sea level and the soils are friable with high amounts of ironstone and quartz scattered throughout.
The grapes are allowed to fully ripen to achieve the maximum power and flavour. Once in the winery, three quarters of the batch were destemmed and treated traditionally with rack and returns and pump overs. The last quarter was left to ferment as whole bunches and diligently used in the final blend to add tannin and juicy mid palate. A small amount of Viognier was also co-fermented separately and diligently blended in summer of 2019.
The appearance is an inky ruby. There are layered aromas of violets, white pepper, star anise and clove. Strawberry and morello cherry are woven in between choc-liquorice notes. The palate shows bramble, blueberry and strawberry fruit notes. Crème brûlée, liquorice, toasted spice and violets are also present with slate-like earth tones in tow. Tannins are fleshy and integrate with the cool acidity and fruit profile making the finish long and refreshing.
A wine like this should be enjoyed hearty dishes, and can be enjoyed with a mild Thai Beef Rendang curry, or whole roasted eye fillet with thyme roasted pumpkin and parsnip. This wine will certainly reward cellaring, and should lay well for 15+ years from vintage.
