Yarra Valley Pinot Noir | Gold Medal Yarra Valley Wine Show 2023
$40 each
The appearance is a bright ruby.
The nose bursts with complexity and freshness. Classic Pinot notes of forest floor and silage come forward, with notes of kirsch, raspberry and fresh strawberry. Tones of clove, cinnamon and nutmeg provide framework to these fruit tones along with oak notes of mahogany and subtle char.
The palate shows the fresh red fruit tones and give rise to sweeter notes of stewed rhubarb and Davidson plum. Spice notes dance around the palate with aforementioned oak notes. Mushroom notes give further depth to the wine. Lacy tannins and soft integrated acid hold the wine in check, giving vitality and freshness to the wine.
This wine is a blend from two distinctly different vineyards in distinctly different fringes of the Yarra valley. These sites feature consistently in this wine every year; the home vineyard in Wonga Park (Siwa) and the Willowlake vineyard in the Upper Yarra. The vast majority of the blend is the much-loved MV6 clone. Once the grapes were handpicked, multiple winemaking techniques were employed, such as whole bunch fermentation, extended maturation and extra-long cold soaking. Each parcel was individually assessed to maximise its potential quality. After pressing, each component was individually run to barrel (20% new French oak) for maturation and a natural malolactic fermentation. After 10 months in oak, the components were carefully assembled and bottled in February 2023.
This Pinot Noir is made with “drink now” appeal, however, this wine is still young and will reward cellaring up to 7 years from vintage.
