The house is light and airy with marble terrazzo floors and ceilings upstairs. Electric convection heating and cast-iron potbelly stove keeps guests cosy in the cooler weather - wood is provided. Satellite TV in English, French and German.

Downstairs is a long dining/sitting room with a typical rustic dining table, plus a modern kitchen with Rosieres duel-fuel cook top, electric bench top oven and laundry facilities. French doors open onto the garden.
Upstairs are two generously sized bedrooms, both with marble fireplaces. One has a queen sized bed and a wrought iron balcony overlooking the garden. The other, larger bedroom which faces the narrow quiet street has twin beds plus a double divan/settee. Heavy oak beams and half-timbering give it great character.

About the Town
Belves is ancient, settled by tribes before the Romans, and there are still trogiodyte caves below the market, and old buildings dating from the middle ages. Our street, rue Foncastel, just off the market square, was formed in 1351! We're in the listed heritage area. But it is also a real country town (pop.1700) with a Saturday morning market in the covered 15th century "halle" selling local delicacies, four bakers/patisseries, two good butchers, bank, post office, four pleasant restaurants, golf, tennis and a town swimming pool, grocer and supermarket. Most of the shopping is within 100 metres of the house.

What to see and do
History on your doorstep. The Dordogne is the centre of pre-history in Europe; there are many famous painted caves (superb depictions of hairy mammoths and bison) and trogiodyte (cave) dwellings nearby. There is a long history of English involvement in the area. Eleanor of Aquitaine joined it to the English crown when she married Henry II. Her son Richard Coeur de Lion (Richard I of England) died fighting nearby in 1199. The battle castles and fortified bastide towns of Beynac, Casteinau and Biron, Domme and Monpazier fought over in the Hundred Years War are compulsory visits! Around every corner there's something more to see.

Getting around
Belves itself will take a day or two to explore -visit the local tourist office. For walkers, Belves is on Grand Randonnee 36, a well marked trail through hamlets and forests. These footpaths crisscross France. There are bikes for hire at the railway station and escorted horse riding through the forests. Canoeing or boating down the Dordogne past the chateaux is easy and delightful.
